Mt. Washington Valley Adult Day Center

Conway, NH

Currently under construction, this 14,000 s.f. adult day center will provide therapeutic and recreational activities for elderly residents and respite care for caregivers of the Mt. Washington Valley region. Designed for a philanthropic organization in conjunction with Memorial Hospital, this 14,000 s.f. facility will provide an array of memory-care services including structured activities, health monitoring, art and music therapy, socialization, and assistance with personal care and bathing.  It will feature a large multi-purpose room, an art room, fully equipped exercise and examination rooms, a spa with salon and massage fixtures, a quiet reading room, year round porch, solarium and dining rooms in addition to administrative and support areas. The organization of interior space provides multiple areas of unique character to support the wide range of programs yet allows for efficient monitoring by staff.

Set on a large elevated site convenient to town, the building has been designed and scaled to resemble a small inn. A covered drop off at the entry leads to a small waiting room with reception desk. The building is organized such that guest areas are located at the rear of the facility. This location affords them access to a large therapy garden with fenced perimeter and southeastern exposure for ample sunlight throughout the day. The massing has been shaped to maintain a residential scale at the garden side. Materials, windows, and trim details including pilasters and columns have been selected to evoke feelings of familiarity.

Building systems feature a steel structural frame, high performance building envelope, variable refrigerant flow HVAC with supplemental radiant slab heat at guest areas and building perimeter. The facility is protected by a sprinkler system. The lighting system features tunable white LED at guest areas.
