This 109,000 s.f. municipal services facility consolidates operations for several city departments. In addition to office space for public works, parks & recreation, and the bus service, the facility includes:

  • maintenance facility for city vehicles
  • carpentry and painting shops
  • parts storage and fabrication shop
  • parking garage for buses, trucks, and equipment
  • automated truck wash bay
  • salt storage shed
  • greenhouse

 

Within the office area, conferencing and training space is configured to serve as an emergency operations center. Sleeping areas are provided adjacent to locker and shower facilities to facilitate 24 hour shifts during storms and emergencies.

 

The facility was designed to comply with Efficiency Maine’s Advanced building program. Through the use of energy modeling and careful material / equipment specification the building is 20-30% more efficient than Maine energy code base-line requirements. A customized manufactured metal building system was utilized to balance cost and functionality. the envelope utilizes insulated metal panels for exterior walls and the roof above vehicle storage. The roof above the office and service space is an EPDM membrane over tapered insulation. Additional energy saving features include skylights in both office and service bay areas and an adjacent solar PV array comprised of over 2,900 panels generating 1.2 million kilowatt-hours of energy per year.
